Captain Colton Sweeney
Administrative Captain
York County Jail
York County Sheriff's Office
Biography
Captain Colton Sweeney grew up in Springvale, Maine, where he graduated from Sanford High School. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for six years. He is a graduate of Daniel Webster College, where he earned a degree in Aircraft Operations.
In 2002, Captain Sweeney began his career at the York County Sheriff's Office as a Reserve Correctional Officer. In 2003, he became a full-time correctional officer, and his career took off from there. Captain Sweeney has worked in almost every job assignment at the jail and has excelled in each one. One of his first supervisory responsibilities was leading the Community Works initiative. This program involved inmates performing community service work such as reclaiming overgrown cemeteries where veterans are buried, applying fresh paint to community buildings, and setting up for community festivals. Under Captain Sweeney's direction, this program was a huge success.
Most recently, Captain Sweeney was the supervisor of the intake area in the jail. This is one of the most difficult job assignments at the Sheriff's Office. This area is where all prisoners are processed when they are brought into the jail, and it requires coordination with many outside agencies on a daily basis. One such example is coordinating with district courts to arrange transports to court hearings or medical facilities for inmates who require treatment. Captain Sweeney was known as the "go-to" person for anybody needing assistance with a question or concern about an inmate at the jail.
Colton Sweeney officially became a Captain on October 1, 2025, when he was unanimously approved by the York County Commissioners. His new job assignment includes maintaining adequate staffing, coaching fellow employees, conducting staff performance evaluations, and making sure all inmates appear in court when scheduled.
In 2024, Captain Sweeney was named the Correctional Officer of the Year by the Maine Sheriff's Association. He has also received the York County Sheriff's Office Mat Baker award, which is given to an employee who represents the values of Chief Deputy Mat Baker, who passed away.
