Basic Corrections Training Program: Interpersonal Communication Skills

Date: July 29, 2026. 0800-1630.

Instructor: MCJA

Course Info: This scenario-based training module develops the interpersonal communication skills Correctional Officers need to maintain safety, professionalism, and control in a corrections environment. Through realistic resident and staff interaction scenarios, trainees will practice using clear communication, active listening, emotional control, respectful authority, and de-escalation strategies.

The module emphasizes that effective communication is not separate from safety and security; it is one of the primary tools officers use to prevent conflict, gain cooperation, reduce risk, and preserve human dignity. Trainees will be evaluated on their ability to communicate professionally, recognize emotional and behavioral cues, respond appropriately under stress, and make decisions consistent with agency expectations and the responsibilities of a Correctional Officer.
