After two decades of dedicated service, York County Commissioner Richard Dutremble is retiring from the York County Commission at the end of this year. This week, Commissioner Dutremble was recognized by the Maine County Commissioners Association (MCCA) for his 20 years of commitment to York County and to county government across Maine.

With a professional finance director, finance manager, a skilled finance staff of four and an “A” grade from auditors, York County Commissioners are asking voters Nov. 3 to abolish the part-time elected treasurer position and appoint a treasurer, instead.

As the minutes ticked toward 8:46 a.m., on Sept. 11, 2026, the honor guard solemnly lowered the Stars and Stripes to half-staff. Then came a salute, and the peel of the bell high in the belfry of York County Court House began to toll, marking the exact minute when a hijacked aircraft slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York on Sept 11, 2001.

York County Sheriff’s Office recruits Matthew Ryan and Lucas Labbe were sworn in by York County Manager Greg Zinser and presented their credentials by York County Sheriff William L. King Jr., in ceremonies on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

There has been a big change in how medical and behavioral health is delivered at York County Jail – a system that will also carry over to the new York County Recovery Center when the facility goes online, targeted to take place early in 2027. York County Government’s new Integrated Medical and Behavioral Health Division began providing care at the jail on July 1.

ork County Government is joining forces with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive on July 30 and is looking for folks to make the commitment to donate a pint, by reserving a time and following through on the day. The blood drive will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 30 in the drill hall at York County Regional Training Center, 79 First County Way ( take Layman Way off Route 4, First County Way is the first right) in Alfred.

And on June 2, 17 newly minted Emergency Medical Technicians graduated from a 16-week program offered by York County Community College and held at York County Regional Training Center in Alfred. The EMT course began in early January, with four hours of classroom work and eight hours of hands-on training in the lab each week and are now eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs certification exam.

U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) stopped by the York County Regional Training Center Wednesday, May 27 for a tour, to see firsthand the facility York County government built largely with federal ARPA funds, county money, grants, and Congressionally Designated Spending that makes exactly that sort of training possible.

When York County Commissioners approved the proposed $31.64 m county operating budget for the next fiscal year April 8 and turned it over to the York County Budget Committee, they did so after learning that some state funds for Maine’s 15 county jails would not be forthcoming and reduced by more than $400,000. The drill tower is among the key components of the York County Regional Training Center – the new multi-discipline first responder center for instruction off Route 4 in Alfred. It was used for fire instruction on that sunny, brisk spring day, but its function is broad.

York County Commissioners are poised to decide later this spring whether to ask voters in November if they wish to appoint a county treasurer, thus abolishing the elected position.
